A big day in wine country: Bodbe Monastery, Sighnaghi, the Chavchavadze estate in Tsinandali, a walk around Telavi and homemade tastings.
Kakheti is a remarkable region east of Tbilisi: old wineries, monasteries, generous cuisine and hospitality where every guest is welcomed like an angel. Here you will taste homemade wine and chacha, churchkhela and fresh bread from a tone oven.
Bodbe Monastery, two kilometres from Sighnaghi, holds the main shrine of Kakheti — the tomb of Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia.
Sighnaghi, the “city of love”, seems to float above the Alazani Valley: cosy winding streets, tiled roofs and one of the largest fortresses in Georgia, begun under Queen Tamar in the 12th century.
The Alexander Chavchavadze house museum in Tsinandali is where modern Georgian winemaking began. Today it has a museum, a historic park, a wine cellar and a tasting room.
Telavi is the heart of Kakheti and the centre of Georgian winemaking, surrounded by valleys and the slopes of the Greater Caucasus.
